Annabel BuelterMechanical engineering student, FSU

Where I have worked and studied

A six-month exchange taken in French, two teaching stints at a school in Siem Reap, an internship in St. Petersburg, and the Makerspace in Tallahassee where most of my fabrication hours come from.

  1. Tallahassee, United States

    lived

Home base for the degree. I coordinate the college Makerspace — running and repairing the 3D printers, training students on the drill press and band saw, and helping people work out how to print what they have designed.

Makerspace Coordinator, FAMU-FSU College of Engineering Makerspace
  2. Fontainebleau, France

    studied

A six-month exchange taken entirely in French, which is where the fluency came from. Doing coursework in a second language taught me how much of engineering is communication — when you cannot rely on saying it fluently, you learn to check that you have actually been understood, and to ask rather than assume. It also made me a lot more comfortable being the person in the room who does not yet know how things work.

  3. Rome, Italy

    studied

A Hillsdale College dual-enrollment program, taken for college credit. The group toured Rome, Florence, Venice and Pompeii studying Western civilization — its history, culture and art.

  4. Siem Reap, Cambodia

    served

Two teaching stints at the HELO School. I built the curriculum for the second stint and introduced placement testing so returning volunteers could pick up where the last group stopped.

  5. St. Petersburg, United States

    worked

Mechanical engineering intern at Power Design. Thermal load simulations for 57 spaces on a live building, then sizing and selecting the equipment to match — the first time my calculations decided what actually got installed somewhere.

Mechanical Engineering Intern, Power Design, Inc.
  6. Golden, United States

    lived

Where I grew up, until we moved to Florida when I was fifteen. Learned to love hiking, rock climbing, and the great outdoors while growing up in the beautiful state of Colorado.

Volunteering

HELO School

  • Managed classrooms of 20–30 students aged 4–12 and built an English language learning curriculum.
  • Introduced standardized placement testing to verify class-level assignment across the school.

Peer Inclusion Team (PIT Crew)

  • Selected as a teaching assistant and tutor in a biology class for students with intellectual disabilities, around 60 hours across the year.
  • Worked one-to-one alongside the classroom teacher on lab activities and coursework.
